New Manfrotto Ball Head Family with Great New Features

November, 2009 -- Aiming to satisfy the photographer’s needs, Manfrotto has updated its ball head family to be the ideal support for your camera. Manfrotto ball heads are known for their smooth control and precise movements, but now Manfrotto has added key new features that make these already great ball heads even better.

The ball heads have been completely updated to be more ergonomic, easier to handle and lighter weight with increased payloads ranging from 4.4 lbs to 17.6 lbs. The ergonomic shape of the knob allows the user to better lock the ball. A new friction control knob allows micro movements without having to engage the head locking mechanisms (present in all models except the small 492 head).

The elliptical lines and curves match the design of the latest Manfrotto tripods.

A smart ratcheting locking lever allows the user to lace it in a comfortable position in order to use it in the most convenient way. Just pull it outwards, put it in the best working position,
and then release it. This makes working with the head easier and quicker.

The locking lever securely locks the head both in the +90º and -90º ball positions and in the 360º pan movements.

The new ball head models include:

Model 492

Model 494

Model 496

Model 496RC2

Model 498

Model 498RC2

Model 498RC4

Wonder when these new models will arrive in Singapore?

Will use it every now and then so prefer not to overspend on this one, anything under $2.5k will be nice.

I have no idea about the brand and what to look out for...

So any suggestion will be great.

I'm thinking of using umbrella lights and/or softbox lighting used in photography studios as my home lighting setup. I have a few concerns though. Hoping some pros can "shed some light" :p

Concerns:
- Heat from lighting? Can i use a less intensive bulb.
- Durablility of bulb. Yearly? Monthly?
- I believe there are energy saving versions as well right?

The best review of the Domke F-3X is HERE so I will not bore you by repeating.

My review is intended to showcase the RUGGEDWEAR material, so far there is no closeup picture review of the RUGGEDWEAR series of Domke bags. Since F-3X is so popular, I thought I would share some closeup pics of my new bag, so everybody can see what RUGGEDWEAR Canvas looks like.

I bought this bag from adorama. I find the service excellent and delivery was within 3 days USPS Express to singapore. Generally, I find Adorama website abit confusing to locate items, and delivery costs are quite expensive. However, for Domke bags, you will find Adorama carries a wider range than B&H at the time of this post. Another thing I noticed about Adorama is that they heavily stuff the bags with paper during delivery. This may be good (keeps shape) or bad (heavier) depending on you.

The bag comes with a wax oil to be applied to the canvas. See pic below. Apart from that, the canvas is light, looks and feels rugged, and appears like leather where you can see light shades or hues (almost look like leather tannin) that make it look rugged a la Indiana Jones. I hope the pics below give you a clear picture of the look of the canvas.

It is Made in USA.

Couple of questions: AS-style Clamp, Plates and tilt head

Hey there! I just recently got a Kirk Bh-3 from the forum and it's a great ballhead. I now want to get out of the manfrotto RC2 system and so, I've sold my 486RC2 and I'll sell my 234RC monopod head soon.

First thing I need to do is find a plate for my 70-200 2.8L IS. I want to get wimberley plates, and it's between the P20 and P30. P20 is recommended and has 1 screw and was made for 70-200, while P30 has 2 screws and is made for larger lenses. Is there a way to take out a screw? Cos if there is, I'll get the P30 for greater adjustment.

Second thing, I'm going to order an L plate for my upcoming 5D mark 2. Should I be getting the RRS one or Kirk one? I would like to get Kirk just because of my next point about the tilt head, but which one is better? Also, if I wouldn't use the 400D + BG-E3 i own now often next time, would it still be wise to get an L plate for that? Mostly used for remote cam.

Last thing is about the tilt head. I'm gonna be selling the manfrotto 234RC head, so I have 2 not so expensive choices. One way is to get a 234 non RC, get a wimberley clamp, anti-rotation washer and then DIY the entire rig myself. Second option is to just get this: http://www.kirkphoto.com/Manfrotto_S...k_Release.html So which d'you think is better?

Any help here would be good!

Cheers,
Zexun
