Canon (and Nikon)- leaders in sales, but not quality and service? JD Power Buyer Repo
I don't know if Canon users have seen this, but it's certainly a surprise to me, considering how well known Canon is.
Too much money on marketing, not enough on R & D and Service?

I don't know too many consumers who make their purchasing choices mainly, or solely, on this thing called 'quality'.

it's easy to see dots on some rating and make some general sweeping statements.
but since JD Power decided not to furbish us with more information other than those dots, you might want to be a little bit more discerning and question why those dots are so.
first of all, in such ratings deduced from surveys, you might want to ask, "What is the sample base?" Did they say how many consumers they surveyed? From which part of the world? Are they current dSLR users? That is just a start.
Next you might want to know, why were the rating factors limited to:
- Shutter Speed/ Lag time
- Variety of Features
- Durability/ Reliability
- Picture Quality
- Ease of operation
Why didn't they include other factors such as "Range of lenses and accessories"? Or "Value for money"?
There are also many other factors that may have affected the results, such as, was there a strict rating system (with specific guidelines) for each factor? Or was it a general 10-point rating of how the consumer feels? If you want to talk about Shutter Speed/ Lag Time, did they state how they derive their 5 dots for Pentax, or 2 dots for Panasonic? Were there questions asking "When you say the lag time is long, what was the speed and make of the memory card you were using?"
unless JD Power decides to show more of the research, i'd advise you to take the ratings with a pinch of salt, just like those camera ratings in photography magazines without proper reviews

JD Power rankings do not reflect actual performance. The ranking only shows how satisfied the users are with what they are being polled about.
Let's take, for example, car rankings, a Ferrari owner might only rate his 458's power 4 out of 5 but a Honda Civic owner would rate his 5 out of 5. Does this make the Civic a powerful car than the 458?

You give JD a million dollars and suddenly the ratings will change. Pentax being the winner is a great joke, let's see how many pro photographers use Pentax during the London Olympics.

not to mention, JD Power traditionally does automobile indexing, although they have been branching out in recent years, but still, this camera rating looks to be the first they have done.
so they aren't really an authority on the subject.

I am quite taken by Pentax gear in recent years. It has not always been so though. My first slr years ago was a Canon, and my first dslr was also a Canon- Eos 350D. I've also had a Sony alpha 300. So while i'm currently a Pentax fan, as you say, I'm certainly not diehard about it. No doubt I'll evaluate my wants and needs and may change brands again in the future.

sigh... we have a thing about intentionally starting a brand war in CS... that is normally de-registration...
i fail to see the purpose of this thread apart from stirring up problems. thread closed.
