Default Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM

This is a very good walkabout lens. It's not the smallest pancake but it is small compared to other canon lenses and pair it with a 5D, it looks cute.
It is very sharp even at f2.8. In fact, i'm using it permanently as a body cap now because it's so small and light…and when i need it i just shoot. I'm still thinking if it can replace the 50mm lens as a light walkabout lens since that's about all i use the 50mm for. I think this is a good must have lens as a low-light (sort of) walkabout night time lens where you just want to bring out for a dinner night out?

The STM motor is MUCH better than the old kit lens motor BUT although it more silent it's not totally silent and i do think it's louder than the USM? But it is VERY slow…especially from infinity to close..then again, i shouldn't compare it to the speed of L lenses...

Same size as body+lens cap together

Thanks for posting these pics! Finally, I see how it looks on a 5D body. Kept seeing the lens on the 650D and had no idea how it will look on a 5D until now.

Can you take some pics with it to showcase its bokeh? Like at f/2.8, very close to subject, with a far away background?

Here are some photos taken at F2.8.
It's not a super sharp lens but i wasn't expecting it to be…If it's as sharp as an L then something wrong liao
But it does good at what i bought it for…dinner with family

    NO distortion

    Not too bad bokeh

Thanks for posting. I envision using it in more or less the same way. When wanting to travel light or trying not to get noticed too much. Where IQ is not of the greatest priority, but getting the shot is.

Bought this pancake this afternoon too. Went in just wanting to "take a look and try out" but eventually succumbed to it's price and size

Some random shots taken in T K Foto to demonstrate it's sharpness and bokeh @ f/2.8 as requested by some bros here.

there will be surely one day someone "reminds" you to take your body cap off when you raise your camera to your eye! Cool lens and congrats to your new purchase guys!

someone should take a frontal shot of this lens with the 50 F1.2…the lens element of this is like a 20cent coin…VERY small..looks very weird..

BTW, this lens isn't even on Canon's database yet so there's no correction data for the 5Dmk3..maybe in due time..
I believe even for Lightroom or ACR or DPP there's no data to correct this lens yet..

Since you are using it as a permanent body cap on your 5D3, have you been affected by the light leak issue?

    ... sorry I couldn't resist.

The photos shown so far look pretty good. IQ and bokeh are pretty decent.

Come to think of it, the lens element is smaller than the full frame sensor... Lol.

    just got this lens.....

here are some casual shots during lunch today, all are quick snaps while walking (except the ice jelly shot)

wanted to test the lens wide open, so did all shots @f2.8 on aperture priority, using 60D

Just got the lens, IMO very slightly sharper than 24-70mm f2.8 and silent focus. ( I thought the af was out of order.)

Has anyone done a comparison with Voigtlander SLII 40/2?

Bro, the 52mm B+W filter is only $40.. where you bought it at near $100?

It is not silent anyway. It has this electronic eeeeee sound when focusing. But it doesn't affect videos that much.
