unlikely that APS-H will be phase out as the demand is still there for birdy....BTW 7Dmark2 will be out by this year end.

Hmm.. well they can turn 7D series into APS-H sensors because 1D and 5D will now be FF sensor series. But if 7D changes to APS-H, I would expect that the price of 7D2 to be much more expensive.

Speaking of birdies, wildlife and sports who may want a crop - I've having mixed feelings. Before 1DX, there is a reason for one to own both 1Ds and 1D - FF for portraits, landscapes etc while the crop for wildlife and sports. Some would own a 1D + 5D instead for a FF + crop combo. These people who owned the 1D will get used to the build, weather seal and the quality of the 1D.

So how will a APS-H 7D2 attract birders who want something soildly built whith reliable weather seal? If they improve too much on the 7D series, it would make it too close to the 5D which is supposed to be a higher line, and Canon has the practice to seperate their line of bodies very carefully. It would make 7D too expensive for it's targetted group too.

If APS-H were to be retained, maybe a 3D or something in between a 1D and 5D would sound more probable.

    But that's just my views

Has anyone tried using a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter as AF-IR assist beam with the 5D3 for extremely low light situations?

Never had the need to. Anyway the ST-E2 only supports 45 points, does not fully support the 61pt AF system. So usage wise may be limited.

In some situations when it is extremely dark the 5D3 has problems focusing, but these are the exception and it is almost total darkness.

My easiest solution for this is to use EVF.

Yup yup... Sorry, I mean using the LCD instead. When very dark, even I cannot see properly, I turn on the live view and adjust the ISO...

I don know if this is the correct way to deal with dark, but it helps...

Thanks, makes sense and a good tip, coming from rangefinders and OVF, I never thought about using Live View.

Need some help guys..i've been trying to figure this out but i can't…I read the 1DX manual and that camera can do this.
I've read that the 5D3 also can do this but i can't figure it out.

Q: How do you switch from a focus zone to a single point focus with a press of a button..basically, you can be in any focusing mode and just press one button and you get single point focus.

I read the manual and it seems you can ONLY assign "switch to registered AF" or "switch to registered AF point" to 2 buttons
    1) The DOF button
    2) The Lens AF off button.

However, i already set the DOF to switch from One Shot to Ai-Servo and i don't have the Lens button as that's only in super tele lenses…
In the 1DX you can se it to the Mn button, the * button or even the AF-On button…is this NOT possible in the 5D3?

edit: I just figured out you can set the mini joystick to switch to registered AF point and by registering the AF to single spot, it will go to single spot but ONLY if you are in 61pt auto..anything else and the button does nothing...

That doesn't sound right. You can set the * button + top wheel/ m-fn button to choose your af point type. You can also go into the menu and adjust it so that you can choose only between single AF point and the other zone AF that you use. That way you will always only have two choices for af.

Furthermore you can set the AF to any of the 4 choices (61 pt, 41 cross type, 15, 9) and single point af will work with joystick on any of these options easily.

the new zoom in function using the NOISY wheel is freaking annoying , i hope canon would revert it back using a button on the next firmware.

You can change custom control to use the SET button as magnify.

Then change the playback so that when you press SET it will magnify to whatever magnification you always look at.

That way you don't have to turn the wheel at all.
